Skill building on your own motorcycle at a recognized MSF Range
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s newest program offering, Rider Skills Lab, empowers RiderCoaches and training sites to configure and tailor classes to meet the unique needs of their students.
RSL information is now live on the MSF website, along with a complete list of ranges offering this program. For recent Basic RiderCourse grads, RSL is a great way to Improve Your Ride, on your own motorcycle. For current riders, RSL can Advance Your Ride, offering new techniques for riders to practice.
“Seeing the excitement of RiderCoaches in the Rider Skills Lab Certification Course has been incredibly rewarding,” said DeAnna Ward, RiderCoach Trainer. “RiderCoaches are not only gaining new tools and techniques to better provide for their students’ individual needs, they are advancing their own skills in the process. RSL has licensed riders from new to experienced, RiderCoaches included, practicing new techniques and refining their skills. There’s something for everyone.”
Key Highlights of RSL
- Customizable Training: RSL utilizes elements from multiple MSF curricula, offering 23 riding exercises to select from. This keeps learning fresh for repeat participants and allows focused practice on specific skills such as braking, tight turns, or cornering. Coaches can work with students to select drills and set a pace that is comfortable for the student. Classes can range from 1-6 hours; each site determines the length and format of the class.
- No Pass or Fail: Since this is not a licensing course, there are no tests to take, no eCourses to complete, and no real need to counsel a student out. If a student is struggling, work with them at their own pace and at their comfort level.
- Open Enrollment: Because it’s a non-licensing course, riders are not limited by where they can take an RSL class. However, riders need to have a valid motorcycle license or endorsement, and have current registration and insurance for their motorcycle. Their motorcycle must also pass a T-CLOCS inspection.
- Nationwide Reach: More than 35 MSF-recognized ranges offer RSL classes across 20 states, with more ranges under review. Currently, 81 RiderCoaches are RSL certified, with more currently undergoing training.
- Enhanced Range Utilization: RSL provides a great way to expand your range offerings and bring more value to your training site.
“RiderCoaches have seen tremendous benefits for both novice and experienced riders,” said Matthew Gentile, MSF Quality Assurance and Training Specialist. “The ability to tailor range exercises to meet each student’s needs allows for a balance of challenge and success that riders truly appreciate. And it’s serious fun.”
